November 10: I have finished painting La Virgen de Providencia for the competition at Plaza Las Americas. I boxed it up and took it to Isaacs this morning to show everyone and to leave it for pickup this monday. I have the potential to make $1000 for this figure if someone likes it enough. The job at the upholstery shop is working out well. Right now I am working on a piece that he has had in storage for the past four years. I think maybe I should go around to all the upholstery shops and offer to do all the work that they have that has been sitting around for years since I think every shop has one of them. This set is interesting in that the carving is pierced and highly decorative. Unfortunately the way they stripped it of the heavy paint that covered the wood was to sand blast it. The blasting was done too vigorously and caused the wood to appear somewhat rough. It is an interesting looking piece though. I basically am rebuilding from the frame up. I have done another set before this set that involved a sofa, two chairs and six dining room chairs. All used the same fabric and the sofa is shown here. We took a trip a few days ago to Ponce with Isaac to collect his fee for carving something for a hospital. On the way back, we encountered a little rain and the sun was still out. This caused a nice rainbow over the valley. While at carving class today, I was invited to go to Peru to visit Machu Pichu next year. Sounds great and perhaps I will be able to go, but if I end up hikng the AT again next year I probably will not go. Today on the way to work Freyda came along so she could use the car after dropping me off. On the way I spotted one half of a pair of Crocks laying along the side of the road and thought, if there were two, I would stop and pick them up - maybe they would fit. About a mile or more afterwards, I spotted another one, the second half. I commented to Freyda about that. Iwent to work for the day and when Freyda returned to pick me up I thought I would see if they were still there, but I did not need to, she had already picked them up and had them all cleaned and ready to wear. Unfortunately they are a little big, but I can slog along in them as a pair of running around in/work shoes for the price - 0$ Can't beat it. I might have to somehow adjust the strap to force my foot all the way up in the footbed. |
